Waymo's Autonomous Vehicles Face Safety Scrutiny: A Software Recall and Questions from Regulators
Waymo, a subsidiary of Alphabet and the parent company of Google, is facing a voluntary software recall for its self-driving taxis after reports of them illegally passing stopped school buses. This move comes as a response to investigations by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and concerns raised by the Austin Independent School District.
The NHTSA opened an investigation in October, prompted by a media report of a Waymo AV failing to stop for a school bus with its red lights flashing and stop arm deployed. This incident was captured on video by WXIA-TV in Atlanta, showing a Waymo vehicle driving around a school bus. The Austin Independent School District has documented 19 instances of Waymo vehicles passing their school buses illegally and dangerously, with one incident occurring just moments after a student crossed in front of the vehicle.
Waymo's Chief Safety Officer, Mauricio Peña, acknowledged the company's commitment to safety standards. He stated that while Waymo is proud of its safety record, it recognizes the need for continuous improvement. Peña announced that Waymo plans to file a voluntary software recall with the NHTSA and will continue to analyze vehicle performance and make necessary fixes.
The company identified a software issue contributing to the incidents and believes subsequent updates will resolve the problem. Waymo emphasizes that no injuries have occurred due to this issue. However, federal regulators are demanding more information about these incidents, and the NHTSA has sent a list of detailed questions to Waymo, asking for documentation of similar incidents and more information on their response.
Waymo's autonomous vehicles have accumulated over 100 million miles of driving and continue to log 2 million miles weekly. The NHTSA suggests that the likelihood of other prior similar incidents is high. As Waymo operates in cities with significantly fewer crashes involving serious injuries and pedestrian injuries compared to human drivers, the company's safety claims are supported by independent analyses from technology news websites.
