A heated debate between Republican Jason Miyares and Democrat Jay Jones for Virginia's attorney general position has sparked intense controversy, with a focus on Jones' disturbing text messages from years ago.
In their sole debate before the November election, Miyares, the incumbent, relentlessly attacked Jones over these texts, suggesting they revealed an unfit candidate for the state's top law enforcement role.
"We've seen a glimpse into Jay Jones' character and how he views those who disagree with him," Miyares stated. "Abraham Lincoln said that character is revealed in the dark, and now we know what Jones was doing in the shadows."
Miyares went on the offensive, directly addressing Jones: "If you applied to be a prosecutor in my office or any other attorney general's office, you wouldn't pass a background check. You've had three years to apologize, Jay, and you've chosen to remain silent."
The criticism stems from texts Jones sent in 2022, suggesting violence against Republican Todd Gilbert, then Virginia's House speaker, including a disturbing reference to "two bullets to the head." Jones also discussed violence against Gilbert's children.
Jones, a former state lawmaker, apologized during the debate, expressing deep regret. "I am ashamed and embarrassed. I apologize to Speaker Gilbert, his family, my family, and every Virginian," he said. "I cannot take back my words, but I promise to be accountable for my mistakes."
The revelation of these texts has further fueled tensions surrounding political violence and has shaken up races across Virginia, one of the first major statewide elections since the 2020 presidential race. While Jones' texts have received bipartisan condemnation, only Republicans have called for his withdrawal from the race.
The debate occurred at a critical juncture, with Republicans investing heavily in the race, running ads centered on Jones' violent texts, and early voting already underway.
Jones attempted to shift the focus, criticizing Miyares for failing to stand up to President Donald Trump and his policies that have allegedly harmed Virginians. "When Trump fires workers, defunds schools, and levies tariffs that destroy our economy, Jason Miyares cheers him on. He won't sue to protect our state's interests, unlike other attorneys general," Jones said.
"I've been held accountable for my actions," Jones added, referring to his texts and a reckless driving conviction. "But our current attorney general refuses to hold the president accountable."
Jones accused Trump, who endorsed Miyares, of "running roughshod over Virginia." He cited the recent firing of federal workers and the government shutdown as examples of Miyares' failure to take legal action to protect the state's values.
"His office has done nothing because he's too weak to stand up to the president," Jones claimed.
Miyares defended his record, stating he had "sued both administrations, Trump's and Biden's, to protect our veterans."
The debate covered various topics, including public safety, addiction, consumer rights, and cashless bail, but often veered into national issues like abortion, transgender rights, and immigration.
At one point, Jones criticized Miyares' record on reproductive rights, but Miyares quickly turned the conversation to trans issues, claiming Jones wouldn't "stand up for female athletes."
Throughout the debate, Jones' texts remained a central issue. In his closing statement, Miyares questioned voters' trust in Jones: "How can we trust someone who sent such disturbing messages? How can we trust Jay Jones to prosecute gang members when he wished violence upon an innocent Virginian?"
"Virginians deserve better," Miyares concluded.
