Despite Shohei Ohtani's recent struggles at the plate, Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts remains confident in the two-way star's ability to contribute to the team's success.
In a recent interview, Roberts emphasized that Ohtani's impact goes beyond his batting average. "Him being in the lineup, getting on base, and creating opportunities for his teammates to drive in runs is a huge contribution," Roberts explained.
Ohtani, a Japanese player, has shown signs of improvement, delivering a key RBI single in the Dodgers' 5-1 win over the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday. Roberts highlighted Ohtani's aggressive approach at the plate, noting that his at-bats in the first two games of the NL Championship Series were "fantastic."
"I think he's in a good spot right now," Roberts said, acknowledging that Ohtani has been dealing with frustration due to his performance. "It's expected, and I don't mind it. He's a talented player, and we're counting on him to step up."
Ohtani, the runaway favorite for his third consecutive MVP award, returned to the pitcher's mound this season after recovering from elbow surgery. He is scheduled to start Game Four on Friday in Los Angeles, and Roberts revealed that there is no strict pitch limit for the 31-year-old.
"The century mark isn't a hard ceiling; it depends on how he's throwing," Roberts said. "He's been waiting for this moment, and with the rest he's had, he'll be ready to deliver."
So, while Ohtani's batting struggles may be a cause for concern for some, Roberts sees the bigger picture and believes in Ohtani's ability to make a difference for the Dodgers.
