Perth Weather Forecast: Sunny Days and Pleasant Temperatures for the New Year (2026)

Imagine starting 2026 basking in the sun, with gentle breezes and that unmistakable holiday cheer in the air. Perth residents, get ready, because the weather forecast for the New Year is looking absolutely spectacular! Forget shivering in the cold; we're talking about postcard-perfect beach days stretching out before you.

The first few days of 2026 are predicted to be a sun-drenched paradise, with temperatures consistently hovering in the low to mid-30s Celsius (that's the lower 90s in Fahrenheit for our international friends!). New Year’s Day itself is expected to bring a maximum of 35.6°C (around 96°F). Friday, Saturday, and Sunday will follow suit with highs of around 34°C (93°F). Think crystal-clear waters, golden sand, and the perfect excuse to fire up the barbie.

So, what's the magic behind this delightful weather? Well, according to Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Jessica Lingard, it's all thanks to a trough – a kind of elongated area of low pressure – making its way down the west coast. Remember that scorching 42°C (108°F) maximum we had on Christmas Day? That was also caused by a similar trough. But here's where it gets controversial... not all troughs are created equal!

"Some of (the troughs) linger around and drive the temperature up into the 40s and we have heatwaves, and other times we just get this nice run of really quite pleasant summery weather,” Ms. Lingard explained. It's a bit like a weather lottery – sometimes you win the heatwave, sometimes you win the perfect beach days! "This trough is going to be hanging around with us all the way through until about Sunday, and then overnight into Monday it does move inland a little bit, so we do have some slightly cooler temperatures for the start of next week down into the high 20s."

Think of it as a weather rollercoaster. "We’ll ride this roller-coaster of the west coast trough forming and some warmer temperatures, and the trough moving inland and getting that cooler break," Ms. Lingard added. So, while the initial days will be hot, hot, hot, a slight cool-down is expected early the following week. Monday is predicted to reach a top of 31°C (88°F), Tuesday 28°C (82°F), and Wednesday 30°C (86°F). And this is the part most people miss... after those sunny days, prepare for a positively chilly 17°C (63°F) overnight minimum on Wednesday! Talk about a change of pace!

But wait, there’s more to the Perth weather story than just sunshine and pleasant temperatures. Residents in the metropolitan area can expect some haze to start their days on Friday and Saturday. This isn't just any haze, though; it's "indicative" of the bushfires that have been unfortunately blazing around Perth in the past few days. What's the connection? Ms. Lingard explains it’s caused by a fascinating weather phenomenon called an inversion.

“What can happen is overnight we get what’s called an inversion forming, so the temperature of the atmosphere should be warmest at the surface and go up, and then it should decrease in temperatures as you move away (from the surface),” Ms. Lingard said. “Overnight that can flip and you end up with the cold air at the surface and slightly warmer air above it ... you can’t mix between these inverted layers of temperature, so you end up with this ‘lid’ feature.” In simpler terms, imagine a lid being placed on the atmosphere overnight, trapping everything underneath.

“If you’ve got any bushfires burning, the smoke has nowhere to go overnight so it hits the ‘lid’ and then spreads out over the metro area,” she continued. “You can wake up to a bit of a hazy start to the day until the sun starts to warm that surface layer up and that temperature inversion rights itself again.” So, the sun, in a way, acts as a natural air purifier, eventually breaking up the inversion and clearing the haze.

While Perth is enjoying this balmy weather, it's important to remember that other parts of Western Australia are facing very different conditions. While revellers flocked to watch dazzling fireworks to ring in 2026 in Perth, further north, Cyclone Hayley tore roofs off homes, forcing locals to shelter. This stark contrast highlights the diverse and sometimes unpredictable nature of Australian weather.

So, Perth, are you ready for a scorching start to 2026? Do you think the potential for bushfire haze is a fair trade-off for the beautiful sunny days? And how do you balance enjoying the warm weather with being mindful of the ongoing bushfire situation? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
