A measles scare is gripping Adelaide, with a potential outbreak threatening the city's public spaces! Health authorities are on high alert, urging residents to be vigilant after a confirmed case of this highly infectious disease. But here's the catch: the infected individual has been out and about, potentially exposing countless others.
On Australia Day, the patient visited the Unley Swimming Centre during peak hours, from 4 pm to 6:30 pm. And the exposure didn't stop there. The following day, they boarded two trams, potentially infecting fellow passengers. The affected trams include the 9.42 am Forestville to Royal Adelaide Hospital route and the 10.11 am return journey to South Terrace.
And this is where it gets concerning: the individual also visited several other popular locations. These include BHP on Franklin Street for an extended period, Rolls n Rice on King William Street during lunchtime, and a popular ice cream parlor, 48 Flavours.
Measles is no ordinary virus. SA Health emphasizes its highly contagious nature, with potential severe complications like pneumonia and encephalitis. The risk is real, especially for those who aren't fully vaccinated. Symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose, sore eyes, and a distinctive blotchy rash.
This isn't an isolated incident. It's the second reported case in South Australia this year, following seven cases in 2022. But here's some reassurance: the listed locations are no longer considered high-risk, according to SA Health.
