Ben Smith, a determined 30-year-old, navigates the quiet streets of Kent at night, pulling his caravan by hand. Without the luxury of a towing vehicle, he taps into his own strength and creativity to transport his mobile home through the scenic landscape of East Kent.

This arduous and labor-intensive task is part of his ongoing quest for stability, a quest that has been shaped by years of grappling with addiction, mental health challenges, and the harsh realities of housing insecurity.
"Each day that I pull the caravan makes me stronger," Ben shares, reflecting on how every effort brings him closer to the life he dreams of building for himself. Though his caravan may be modest, having acquired it just a few months ago, it represents a cherished space he can truly call his own.
The interior is still a work in progress; repairs are needed, and the living conditions are quite basic. Nonetheless, Ben takes pride in his little home, referring to it affectionately as "a bit of a project" or "a do-upper."
Living day-to-day requires careful planning and resourcefulness. Ben often relies on his ingenuity to make ends meet, sometimes accepting assistance from kind-hearted strangers. Occasionally, passersby have even stopped to lend a hand with towing his caravan. Yet, the road has not been without its challenges. "I’ve faced threats of violence," he recalls, sharing distressing experiences. "I’ve been told I’d get the s*** beaten out of me and that my caravan would be set on fire, all because I choose to live in a caravan."
Inside, the conditions are stark; there is no electricity, and both the bathroom and kitchen sink are in need of repair. To stretch his budget, Ben admits he primarily "survives on pasta" and keeps only a handful of belongings—a television, a few DVDs, and a bicycle. During the recent cold snap, staying warm became a pressing concern, making it essential for him to fuel his heater.
Looking back on his past, Ben speaks candidly about the years spent shuttling between hostels, temporary shelters, and periods of rough sleeping. Originally hailing from Erith, he moved to Sittingbourne at eight and was raised on various Catholic traveller sites. “From the age of 15, I was often sleeping rough,” he reflects. “It has been an incredibly tough journey filled with encounters with some really unpleasant individuals. I’ve slept in doorways, tents, and parking lots.”
Although he later found refuge in hostels, Ben describes them as unsafe and invasive environments. "They were rife with violence and substance abuse," he notes, adding that the intrusive nature of staff searches further complicated his situation. Despite these hardships, Ben celebrates having been clean from drugs for a decade now. "I’ve dealt with substances like crack and heroin, but I’ve turned my life around, and I’m focused on rediscovering my true self. I want to prevent others from falling into the same traps that led to my homelessness."
A pivotal moment in his life occurred after he lost close friends and experienced a severe medical crisis, prompting him to seek change. Following a schizophrenia diagnosis, living in the caravan has offered more than mere shelter; it has become a cornerstone for stabilizing his mental well-being. Now, Ben reports being able to establish a daily routine and focus on the goal of settling down permanently. He envisions returning to work, reminiscing about earning £600 a week at a recycling plant in the past.
"Within a year, I aim to have a permanent spot on private land, alongside my caravan and a car, complete with some fencing around it," he expresses. "I don’t want to keep moving forever."
