Giants Trade Deadline: Should They Cut Their Losses on Jalin Hyatt and Evan Neal? (2026)

Is it time for the New York Giants to cut their losses on some high-profile draft picks?

It seems the clock might be ticking for receiver Jalin Hyatt and guard Evan Neal, as the NFL trade deadline looms. Despite being healthy, both players were benched in the recent game against the Eagles, sparking questions about their future with the team.

While cornerback Deonte Banks has managed to fight his way back into the starting lineup, the situation for Hyatt and Neal looks less promising. The Giants might be forced to make a tough decision sooner than expected, possibly even before the Tuesday trade deadline. They may need to clear a spot on the 53-man roster, potentially through a trade, release, or moving a player to injured reserve, especially if cornerback Rico Payton is activated from injured reserve.

Hyatt, a 2023 third-round pick, has struggled to make a significant impact, with only 11 catches for 79 yards in 21 games over the past two seasons. The Giants even opted to use practice-squad player Lil’Jordan Humphrey over Hyatt in the last three games. This raises the question: why hasn't Hyatt lived up to his potential after a promising rookie season?

Receivers coach Mike Groh cited "a number of factors" but declined to elaborate, while still expressing optimism about Hyatt's future.

Neal, the 2022 first-round pick, has been a healthy scratch in all eight games this season. He was moved from right tackle to right guard during the offseason, but he fell to third string after taking first-team reps in training camp. Offensive line coach Carmen Bricillo believes Neal has embraced the transition and sees him primarily as a guard.

But here's where it gets controversial... Should the Giants consider trading Hyatt and Neal for late-round draft picks? This decision could be made easier by the fact that an acquiring team would owe Hyatt about $2.1 million through next season. The Giants might also learn from their past mistakes, especially considering Neal's trade value is diminished because he's a half-season rental at around $550,000.

In other team news, several key players are ruled out or doubtful for the upcoming game. The Giants will be without CB Paulson Adebo (knee), CB Cor’Dale Flott (concussion), CB Art Green (hamstring), and DL Chauncey Golston (neck). TE Daniel Bellinger (neck) and OT Jermaine Eluemunor (pec) are doubtful. With the addition of third-string QB Jameis Winston, this could be the inactive list for Sunday.

Eluemunor's goal was to start all 17 games this season. If he can't play, rookie RT Marcus Mbow is next up. Safety Jevon Holland (knee) and Payton (groin) are questionable. The secondary is in a tough spot, and CB Korie Black, who was on the Jets practice squad, could start.

Coach Brian Daboll is preparing his team to adapt, stating that everyone must be ready to step up. RBs coach Ladell Betts is confident in Cam Skattebo's recovery from a dislocated ankle and fractured tibia, saying that Skattebo will handle his rehab well.

And this is the part most people miss... The Giants are at a crossroads, needing to decide if they should trade these draft picks.
