Explore the Roaring 1920s at Staffordshire History Centre! (2026)

Step back in time to the Roaring 1920s with Staffordshire History Centre's newest exhibition! This immersive experience offers a unique opportunity to explore life during an iconic era, showcasing the decade's vibrant culture and enduring impact. From fashion to technology, and art to daily life, the exhibition provides a captivating glimpse into the past.

The 'Twenties Takeover' exhibition is a treasure trove of artifacts, including a stunning Georgette evening dress that epitomizes the decade's ornate styles. Visitors can also marvel at a chemist's sample case, still holding medicines from a century ago, and even discover early technology like a gramophone. Despite the shadow of war, the 1920s marked a period of British renewal and transformation.

Hayley Coles, a prominent figure in Staffordshire County Council, praises the exhibition, highlighting its educational value. She says, 'This exhibition offers a unique opportunity to explore life during the iconic 1920s. From everyday items like hats and shoes to brightly decorated ceramics, there's something for everyone. You can even learn the Charleston dance steps and strike a pose in our selfie station!'

The exhibition runs until May 9th and features the artwork of Mabel Layng, an oil painter who captured life in the post-war years. The Staffordshire History Centre, located in Stafford, is a treasure trove of history, open Tuesday to Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm. Entry is free, and the centre offers a research room, educational spaces, historical collections, and a variety of exhibitions throughout the year. Partly funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, the centre has received a substantial grant of £4.8 million.
