Effective patient handling is a cornerstone of safe and efficient healthcare. It not only prevents injuries among caregivers but also ensures the safety and dignity of patients. To address evolving challenges in this field, an Erasmus+ project was launched and supported by EPOS.
Building on the success of an earlier project focused on ergonomic patient transfer, this initiative set out to tackle a broader scope. Recognizing the complexities of handling obese patients and the need for assistive devices, the project aimed to revolutionize training and best practices in patient handling.
The project team developed five comprehensive deliverables (all available in six languages):
- Interactive Platform
The cornerstone of the project is an interactive platform, meticulously designed through extensive market research, literature reviews, and contributions from all participating countries. This platform features a digital handbook on topics such as anatomy, biomechanics, obesity, and patient handling techniques, offering healthcare professionals a robust knowledge base. - Enhanced eUlift+ App and Web Version
The eUlift+ app was upgraded with new 3D animations showcasing patient handling with assistive devices and techniques for obese patients. The app also incorporates advanced tools like BMAT 2.0, MK5, and VerV’s Decision Tree of the MK5. A reliability study on MK5 will soon be published in the British Journal of Nursing. - E-Learning Modules
Interactive e-learning content was developed to complement the app and web platform. Additionally, the assessment tool the Tilthermometer and the BMI40+ facility check are integrated, making training accessible and practical. - Integrated Learning Paths
Unique learning paths blend various tools into a cohesive training experience. Designed for both students and healthcare professionals, these paths are easy to integrate into existing curricula and offer diverse learning formats, including text, videos, and infographics. - Tailored Training and On-Demand Resources
Recognizing the need for flexibility, the project introduced tailored training options, FAQs, and on-demand content, and has an innovative approach to addressing less common patient transfers. The team partnered with students to identify and map out exceptional transfers. These scenarios were analyzed, solutions were developed, and educational videos with infographics were produced, now accessible on the project’s YouTube channel.
The eUlift project demonstrates the power of technology in improving patient handling training and sets the stage for future innovation.
