A bold artistic statement, a fusion of automotive and concrete, has left an indelible mark on Chicago's art scene. Today, we celebrate the 56th anniversary of Wolf Vostell's iconic creation, 'Concrete Traffic'. This unique sculpture, a 1957 Cadillac Sedan DeVille encased in 16 tons of concrete, was born in a public parking lot near the Museum of Contemporary Art.
Vostell, a pioneer of the Fluxus movement, believed art should be an integral part of daily life, not confined to museums. His work, a playful yet powerful commentary on urban life, challenges our perceptions of art and its place in society.
But here's where it gets controversial: Vostell's process-oriented approach meant the creation of 'Concrete Traffic' was more than just a physical transformation. It was an 'instant happening', a performance art piece in itself. The car, prepared with a rebar and wire frame, was towed to the parking lot, where a cement mixer poured concrete over it, encasing it in a shell. Six days later, the mold was removed, revealing a striking new form.
The sculpture, with its crude yet captivating mold, retained an essence of the Cadillac's identity. It stood in that parking spot for five months, an intriguing spectacle for passersby. Could this have inspired Jaguar's design evolution?
'Concrete Traffic' was later moved to the University of Chicago campus, where it remained for decades, before undergoing restoration in 2016. The underside of the sculpture, often unseen, reveals the true genius of the work - a real car encased in concrete, its chassis dramatically burdened yet seemingly bearing the weight with resilience.
And this is the part most people miss: the University of Chicago's fact sheet reveals the Caddy was purchased for a mere $89 in 1970, equivalent to about $743 today. A true bargain for such a unique piece of art!
Happy anniversary, 'Concrete Traffic'! May your legacy continue to inspire and provoke thought.
