CNN is set to exit HBO Max, leaving fans in a digital dilemma. This move comes as the news channel prepares to launch its own direct-to-consumer streaming service later this fall, marking a major shift in how audiences access live news. But here's where it gets controversial: after two years of offering 24/7 live coverage to HBO Max subscribers, CNN will remove its live programming from the platform starting November 17. This decision raises questions about the future of news delivery and the evolving relationship between cable and streaming services.
The Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) split, which will separate CNN from the parent company next year, is a key factor in this change. Alongside CNN, other channels like HBO and Discovery Sports are expected to leave HBO Max, with Discovery Inc. developing its own sports offerings. While live CNN broadcasts will vanish from the platform, HBO Max will still host select original series, including Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown, Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy, and The Whole Story with Anderson Cooper.
"CNN has benefitted tremendously from its two years of offering a live 24/7 feed of news to HBO Max customers," said Alex MacCallum, executive VP of digital products and services for CNN. "We learned from HBO Max’s large base of subscribers what people want and enjoy the most from CNN, and with the launch of our own new streaming subscription offering coming later this fall, we look forward to building off that and growing our audience with this unique, new offering."
And this is the part most people miss: while CNN’s live news will no longer be available on HBO Max, the platform will still serve as a hub for exclusive originals. This transition reflects a broader trend in media, where traditional broadcasters are adapting to the rise of direct-to-consumer models. But here’s the big question: Will this move ultimately benefit viewers, or does it risk alienating long-time fans who relied on HBO Max for real-time news? What do you think?
