A life well-lived and a legacy of love: Barbara "Ruth" Stevens' remarkable journey.
On a peaceful Sunday morning, December 28, 2025, Ruth took her final breath at the Blind River Health Centre, leaving a profound impact on all who knew her. At 77 years young, her story is one of devotion, family, and an unwavering commitment to community.
A loving family woman:
Ruth's love story began with her husband, Edwin, a partnership that endured for an incredible 57 years. Together, they raised a beautiful family: daughter Debbie and son Tim, who found their own loves in Dwayne and Patti, respectively. The family tree blossomed further with grandsons Jared, Lucas, Ethan, and Tyler, each bringing joy and laughter into Ruth's life.
Born in Richards Landing, Ruth was the pride and joy of her parents, Artie and Laura Littleton, and a cherished sister to six siblings. Her early years on the family farm instilled a deep appreciation for nature, hard work, and the power of community, values she carried throughout her life.
A community pillar:
Ruth's impact extended far beyond her family. In the Sault, she was a dedicated Block Parent and an extra-ed volunteer at Parkland School, nurturing the community's youth. But here's where it gets interesting: when Ruth and Edwin returned to St. Joseph Island, they built their dream home, and she became a mentor to young Pathfinders, shaping the lives of countless young people.
And this is the part most people miss: Ruth's love for gardening and the outdoors was legendary. She found joy in making maple syrup and exploring the beauty of Canada with Edwin. An avid skier, golfer, and disc golfer, she embraced life with passion. But was her life truly complete without the chance to share these experiences with others?
A life celebrated:
Ruth's passing leaves a void, but her memory will forever be cherished. Friends and family are invited to celebrate her life at the Royal Canadian Legion Hall on January 3, 2026, from 1-4 pm. Donations can be made to the St. Joseph Township PSW Outreach Program or the Children's Library, Richards Landing, ensuring her legacy of love and support lives on.
As we reflect on Ruth's journey, let's consider: How can we honor those who leave a lasting impact on our lives? Is it through our actions, our memories, or something else entirely? Share your thoughts in the comments, and let's celebrate the remarkable life of Barbara "Ruth" Stevens.
