Jersey GPs Embrace AI for Skin Cancer Detection
A groundbreaking development in healthcare technology is revolutionizing the way skin cancer is diagnosed in Jersey. A group of dedicated GPs has embraced artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance their ability to identify skin cancer, offering faster and safer clinical decision-making.
The key player in this innovation is Skin Analytics, a software firm that has developed the DERM app. This app has been trained on a vast array of images, including common cancers, pre-cancerous conditions, and benign lesions. The goal is to provide a powerful tool that can help identify skin cancer with precision, potentially reducing the need for unnecessary referrals.
First Medical, a GP practice in Jersey, has become the pioneer in adopting this technology. Dr. Brendan Loane, a GP partner at First Medical, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, 'We're exceptionally proud to be the first GP practice in Jersey to deliver this wonderful innovation to our patients.'
The impact of this technology is twofold. Patients with skin lesions can receive the reassurance they need as early as possible, ensuring timely and accurate diagnoses. Simultaneously, doctors benefit from the app's ability to identify and treat worrisome skin cancer cases at the earliest stages, potentially improving patient outcomes.
The urgency of skin cancer diagnosis in Jersey is highlighted by Skin Analytics' data. In September, over 125 dermatology patients were waiting for urgent medical pathways, with a median wait time of seven weeks for a first appointment. Additionally, 526 patients were on routine pathways, and half of them had to wait 16 weeks or more for their initial appointment.
The introduction of the AI tool aims to address these wait times by identifying and safely discharging up to 50% of cases, potentially reducing the overall wait time for a diagnosis. Since its implementation in the NHS England in 2020, the app has assessed over 220,000 patients and detected more than 18,000 skin cancers, showcasing its remarkable accuracy and impact.
