A Different World Sequel: Hillman College Returns on Netflix (2026)

Get ready to revisit Hillman College! Netflix is bringing back A Different World with a sequel series, and it's set to introduce a whole new generation to the magic of HBCU life. This revival has been in the works for over a year, and it's already generated a lot of buzz.

The new series will follow Deborah, the daughter of the beloved Whitley (Jasmine Guy) and Dwayne Wayne (Kadeem Hardison) from the original show. Deborah, played by Tony Award winner Maleah Joi Moon, is embarking on her freshman year at Hillman, the same HBCU her parents attended.

But here's where it gets exciting: Felicia Pride, known for her work on Bel-Air and Grey’s Anatomy, is taking the reins as showrunner. Adding to the excitement, several alumni from the original 1987-93 NBC series are also involved as executive producers, including Debbie Allen, Reggie Rock Bythewood, Gina Prince-Bythewood, and Tom Werner. Allen, who directed many episodes of the original, will even direct the series premiere and two other episodes in the first season.

Felicia Pride expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “It is such an honor to be a part of bringing back this iconic show, one that I grew up on and which had a profound impact on my life. I am so proud of the work we’re doing to reimagine A Different World for beloved fans and new generations alike.”

For those who may not know, A Different World was a spin-off of The Cosby Show, initially following Denise Huxtable (Lisa Bonet) in college. After Bonet's departure, the show evolved into an ensemble piece featuring iconic characters like Whitley, Dwayne, and many others. It's worth noting that while Bill Cosby is credited as the creator of the original series, he is not involved in the sequel.

The sequel's logline teases Deborah's journey: “The series follows Deborah as she enters her freshman year at her parents’ HBCU alma mater and finds their shadow difficult to escape. She sets out to build her own legacy — while having the time of her life — alongside a whole new generation of Hillman’s best and brightest.”

Alongside Moon, the new series will feature Alijah Kai, Chibuikem Uche, Cornell Young IV, Jordan Aaron Hall, and Kennedi Reece.

The Bythewoods shared their heartfelt connection to the show, saying, “A Different World changed everything for us. It was where we got our start as writers and where we found each other. This show has always been a part of our love story. To return to Hillman now and help reimagine this world for a new generation feels like a continuation of that legacy — one rooted in love, purpose, and possibility.”
