Get ready for an exciting day of MotoGP action! The official Sepang MotoGP test is underway, and today is all about Day 2, where the riders will push their limits and showcase their skills. But here's a twist: the reigning champion, Marc Marquez, is missing from the track due to a shoulder surgery he underwent last October.
The day started with a bang as Joan Mir, riding for Honda HRC Castrol, set the fastest lap of the test so far, clocking an impressive 1:56.874s. He was closely followed by Franco Morbidelli of Pertamina VR46 Ducati, who was the only other rider to break into the 1m 56s barrier. However, the absence of Marquez and the entire Yamaha team due to a technical issue with their new V4 bike added an unexpected element to the proceedings.
As the day progressed, the track action was split into two sessions, with the first running from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm and the second from 1:20 pm to 6:00 pm. During the lunch break, the atmosphere was tense as Yamaha's investigation into their technical issue continued, leaving their riders on the sidelines.
And this is the part most people miss: the weather played a crucial role! A late afternoon rain shower put a dampener on the proceedings, and the best times of Session 2 were well off Joan Mir's morning best. HRC's Mir and VR46's Morbidelli went into the final day of testing as the only riders to have broken the 1m 57s barrier so far.
Despite the rain, some riders, including Diogo Moreira, Maverick Vinales, and Franco Morbidelli, ventured out for some wet laps at the end of the day. It was intriguing to see how they adapted to the changing conditions.
The combined times for Day 2 saw Joan Mir leading the pack, followed by Franco Morbidelli and Fabio Di Giannantonio. Marc Marquez, who didn't attempt a time attack in the morning, ended the day in 15th place.
Here's a look at the top 10 riders from Day 2:
- Joan Mir (Honda HRC Castrol) - 1:56.874s
- Franco Morbidelli (Pertamina VR46 Ducati) - 1:56.983s
